Chemistry Placement Exam for Fall 2011

STUDENTS INTERESTED IN ENROLLING IN CHEM 120A OR 200 FOR FALL 2011
All students planning to enroll in Chemistry 120A General Chemistry or Chemistry 200 Chemistry for Nursing and Allied Health Professionals are expected to take the Chemistry Placement Exam (CPE) or have completed Chemistry 115: Introduction to General Chemistry or its equivalent, verified with official transcript, with a grade of C or higher. In addition all students enrolling in Chemistry 120A and Chemistry 200 must be exempt from or have passed the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM). Enrollment in CHEM 120A and CHEM 200 is not possible without meeting this prerequisite.

The CPE may be taken only once a year. Test scores are valid for two consecutive semesters.

You will have 45 minutes to complete the Chemistry Placement Exam (CPE). The CPE consists of 44 multiple-choice questions addressing basic concepts in arithmetic, algebra and high school chemistry. In scoring the test only correct answers will be counted. A Periodic Table of elements and a table of abbreviations and symbols are provided in the test book. You may need them for some questions. All other data are given in the questions. Calculators are permitted but not essential.

BRING number 2 pencils with erasers and a nonprogrammable calculator to the test session.

Test results will be posted outside the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, located in McCarthy Hall - room 580, approximately one week after the test. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will not give scores over the telephone.

Pre-registration is required to take the CPE on the dates listed above. There is no charge for the exam but pre-registration is required in order to take the test.

Pre-registration is NOT required for these CPE sessions. There is no charge for the exam.

CPE Results

For those who pass the CPE, submit to MH 580 by e-mail or in writing, name, CWID, campus e-mail address, telephone number and the sections of CHEM 120A or CHEM 200 in which you wish to enroll in order of preference. Please provide two or three options. You will be contacted by e-mail when a permit to register is issued to you. You will have 48 hours to register for the indicated section via Titan Online. Students who do not pass CPE are advised to enroll in CHEM 115. Permits to enroll are not required for CHEM 115.

CPE Exemptions

To be exempt from the CPE, students must have completed Chemistry 115: Introduction to General Chemistry or its equivalent with a grade of C or higher.

If you have taken an equivalent chemistry course at another college, you must submit a copy of your transcript or course grade and a course description to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry prior to enrolling in Chemistry 120A: General Chemistry. All students enrolling in Chemistry 120A and Chemistry 200 must also be exempt or have passed the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM). Include contact information and the schedule number of the sections of CHEM 120A or CHEM 200 in which you wish to enroll.
