The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in Inorganic Chemistry.

Position
Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the core lecture and laboratory courses for inorganic chemistry and related courses in other chemistry disciplines, at the undergraduate and graduate level.  Faculty are expected to develop a vigorous research program involving undergraduate and graduate (MS) students that attracts external funding and leads to refereed publications.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related field.
  • Post-doctoral or equivalent research experience is strongly preferred.
  • Research interests in all areas of inorganic chemistry will be considered, but preference will be given to candidates whose interests complement those of faculty in biochemistry and chemistry (please see web site, http://chemsrvr2.fullerton.edu/) and who are willing to engage in collaborative and/or interdisciplinary research in related fields.
  • Applicants must be able to teach core lecture and laboratory courses in inorganic chemistry and related courses in other chemistry disciplines. 
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have teaching experience and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and Master’s levels.
  • Applicants must have the ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.

Rank & Salary

The Department
The Department has long been committed to an educational program that includes extensive involvement of undergraduate and graduate students in faculty-guided research.  A variety of modern, research-grade instruments and facilities is available in the Department and College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, which is also home to the W.M. Keck Foundation Center for Molecular Structure, a comprehensive x-ray diffraction facility and computational laboratory that serves all 23 campuses of the CSU system.  Departmental extramural funding is in excess of $1 million per year.  There are active research grants from a variety of agencies, including NSF, NIH, Research Corporation, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, and the ACS Petroleum Research Fund, as well as program grants supporting sites for NIH-MARC, MIRT, and NSF-REU programs.  Degrees offered are the BA in Chemistry and BS in Chemistry and Biochemistry, as well as emphases in Environmental Chemistry and Biotechnology, and the MS in Chemistry.  The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry currently has nineteen tenured/tenure-track faculty positions. 

The University and College
California State University, Fullerton, which enters its 50th academic year with an enrollment of about 37,000 students, is located in northern Orange County, California.  Faculty in the Department has access to modern research and teaching facilities, including a relatively new laboratory building and a state-of-the-art 120-seat lecture facility.  All university offices, most classrooms, and all research and teaching laboratories have fiber-optic networked high-speed, high-throughput electronic data access, and most of the campus is Wi-Fi accessible.  The 225-acre campus is located in close proximity to other major universities and research institutes that offer possibilities for collaboration.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry invites applications for a tenure-track position in Chemical Education, preferably at the Assistant Professor level.

Position
Successful candidates must be committed to excellence in teaching. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the lecture and laboratory courses of the chemistry or biochemistry discipline at the undergraduate level and in graduate courses with an opportunity to teach graduate courses in the Science Education Program for the Master of Arts in Teaching Science (MAT-S) degree.  Faculty are expected to develop a vigorous research program involving undergraduate and graduate (MS or MAT-S) students that attracts external funding and leads to refereed publications.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in chemistry/biochemistry or in chemical education, and post-doctoral or equivalent research experience in chemical education.

A willingness to engage in collaborative research in related fields is desirable.

Graduate Teaching Associate (TA)
Class Code 2354

Positions
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has a number of positions for Graduate Teaching Associates each semester.   A TA is a CSUF graduate student who is appointed part-time, usually to teach credit-bearing laboratory courses.  Responsibility for a course may be vested in the TA under the direct supervision of an appropriate faculty member.

Duties may include the following:

  • providing classroom, laboratory, and/or field instruction,
  • preparing course materials, preparing and administering assignments to students,
  • administering examinations, grading student work and otherwise assessing student performance, and determining course grades,
  • holding scheduled office hours, and
  • meeting the expectations of TAs for the specific course, as established by the Department, supervising faculty member, and/or course laboratory coordinator.

Participation in the Laboratory Safety Class offered by the CSUF Research and Instructional Safety Office is required for all TA's within the first two weeks of the academic term for continued appointment.

Qualifications and Hiring Criteria*

  • Completion of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Currently enrolled or admitted to a CSUF Master’s degree program that is related to chemistry or biochemistry.  (Students enrolled in credential programs are not eligible for this position.)
  • Knowledge of the subject matter of the course(s) to which the individual is assigned.
  • Familiarity with CSUF and Chemistry and Biochemistry Department policies and procedures on field trips, Department vehicle use, and lab safety is expected, where appropriate.
  • Ability to relate well to others within the academic environment.
  • Ability to instruct and evaluate students effectively.
  • For the initial appointment, evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work (transcripts and/or letters of recommendation), and for reappointment, agreement by research adviser.

Chemistry and Biochemistry Department Graduate Teaching Associates are hired in Range A of Class Code 2354.
For subsequent appointment, the graduate student must be in good standing, as defined by the University and Department, and show evidence of satisfactory progress toward completion of the degree.  In addition, if previously appointed as a Chemistry and Biochemistry TA and/or GA, the student’s performance must have been evaluated as satisfactory, with re-hiring recommended.

Graduate Assistant (GA)
Class Codes 2325 (Monthly), 2355 (Academic Year) or 2326 (On-Campus Work Study)

Positions
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has a number of positions for Graduate Assistants each semester.  A GA is a CSUF graduate student who, under immediate supervision, is appointed part-time to assist faculty teaching credit-bearing courses or to assist faculty in research activities. 

Duties may include the following:

  • assisting in the instruction of students, clarifying course material or course content for students, leading small discussion groups,
  • supervising laboratory periods, workshops, or other course activities,
  • preparing course materials for lecture, laboratory, or field components of courses,
  • assisting the instructor by handling equipment or performing demonstrations,
  • maintaining office hours to provide direct individual contact between student and GA,
  • generally assisting faculty in evaluating student work and grading examinations,
  • assisting faculty with field experience, supervision, or simulation exercises,
  • providing assistance to faculty and students conducting authorized research by collecting, synthesizing, and analyzing data, searching the literature and compiling bibliographies or literature reviews, operating and maintaining research equipment, preparing research materials, assisting in the conduct of laboratory or field experiments, etc., and
  • performing other functions requiring knowledge and background beyond that generally possessed by undergraduate assistants.

An Instructional Student Assistant is a CSUF graduate or undergraduate student who is appointed at an hourly rate to perform teaching, grading or tutoring duties, during an academic term, under the direct supervision of an appropriate faculty member.

Duties may include the following

  • providing classroom, laboratory, and/or field instructional assistance to a faculty member or student,
